Hareyama Kofun is a designated historical site tumulus in Izumo city, Shimane prefecture, situated on a small hill. Despite being private property, it has left behind a stone chamber that venerates ancient great figures as a valuable legacy, becoming a prideful presence in the world.
Looking up at the stone chamber, it exudes a magnificent presence, and stepping inside feels like stepping into an extraordinary space as if transcending time. Two trees in front of the entrance serve as the landmark of the tumulus.
Due to the danger of collapse inside, it is currently not possible to enter, but you can peek inside through the crevices in the stone. With a flashlight, you can immerse yourself in a more intense atmosphere. Would you try to evoke the weight of time while reminiscing about the sleep of ancient great men?
Hareyama Kofun is located about a 20-minute drive from the city center of Izumo. It is necessary to walk about 10 minutes uphill from the nearest bus stop, but the presence of the tumulus reached after passing through the quiet forest is well worth the small adventure.
