Museum • 442 Shirafu, Fukushima, Matsumae District, Hokkaido 049-1301, Japan
Situated on the eastern side of Matsumae District in Hokkaido, there lies Fukushima Town, surrounded by magnificent nature and tranquil countryside scenery. A wooden school building, exuding a palpable sense of history, stands slightly away from the town center. Its name is the Chiropp Museum. This was once Shirafu Elementary School, serving as a place of learning for children for 126 long years.
Stepping into the school building feels like embarking on a literal 'museum through time and space.' The classrooms retain a strong sense of nostalgia, with thick blackboards and nostalgic desks and chairs. Ascending the stairs, one finds an abundance of nostalgic daily necessities and household goods. There are numerous displays of traditional items such as dolls for the Doll Festival, ema (votive plaques), and agricultural implements that were once used. From toys to kitchen utensils, countless nostalgic items are lined up.
In addition to these exhibits, the Chiropp Museum offers spaces for experiential activities. In the indoor gymnasium, one can experience the atmosphere of a sports day, as well as view the real hina dolls and carp streamers up close. There are trees to sit and swing on in the schoolyard, and a corner where prizes can be obtained from a nostalgic game booth. Through traditional play and experiences, both children and adults can enjoy the thoughtfully designed activities.
One of the distinctive features of Chiropp Museum is its close ties to the local community. Local residents assist in the management and operation of the facility. Thanks to their efforts, the precious historical items are carefully preserved and displayed here.
As modernization advances and the traces of the past are gradually disappearing, places like Chiropp Museum are becoming increasingly significant. The white school building standing amidst the town seems as if time has stood still. By visiting here and being surrounded by the nostalgic atmosphere and scenery, one can surely create unforgettable memories.
