Situated in a quiet corner of Hitoyoshi City, Sekisuiji Temple is known as the oldest temple in the Kuma region, standing as a historic sanctuary. Its origins trace back to the distant Heian period, having long served as a spiritual pillar for local believers.
The greatest attraction of Sekisuiji Temple is the hundreds of wind chimes decorating the temple grounds during summer. The colorful glass wind chimes swaying in the wind and producing crisp melodies become a quintessential summer tradition. Transparent bubbles from the bubble machine further enhance this mystical atmosphere.
Stepping into the main hall reveals a space where solemnity and artistry beautifully harmonize. Particularly noteworthy is the "Nadebotoke" enshrined on the second floor. This mystical statue of Buddha leaves a deep impression on visitors.
The attic exhibition room in the main hall showcases precious scrolls such as the "Sixteen Rakan Paintings" and the "Ten Kings of Hell Paintings." These works visually portray the profound world view of Buddhism and are must-see items not only for art lovers but also for those interested in history and religion.
The charm of Sekisuiji Temple can be enjoyed throughout the year. The cherry blossoms in spring, wind chimes in summer, autumn leaves, and winter tranquility each bring unique expressions of beauty. Additionally, you can seek special souvenirs such as paper-cut Goshuin and limited edition Goshuin books.
From Kumamoto Airport, it takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes via the highway. However, please note that roads around the temple are narrow and have poor visibility, so drive with caution. Free parking is available for about 8 cars.
Sekisuiji Temple is Hitoyoshi's hidden gem that elegantly merges history, art, and nature. It is a mystical space where tranquility and activity coexist, offering a unique time for rejuvenation and refreshment of both the mind and body.
