Wasurei Shrine sits on a quiet hillside slightly away from the city of Uwajima. The precincts, scattered with ancient caves and peculiar rocks revered since ancient times, are enveloped in a mysterious atmosphere. Walking along the approach, one is greeted by the imposing sight of the largest stone-painted vermilion Torii gate in Japan.
This shrine has its origins in a tragic event during the Edo period. It was erected by the then feudal lord to console the regret of 47 loyal retainers who had failed in their attempt to avenge their lord. The shrines within the precincts stand as a living testament to their spirit and dedication.
From the approach, one can enjoy a magnificent view of the sacred grounds. The enchanting walking path with diverse seasonal foliage promises to soothe one's heart. In autumn, the splendor of the autumn leaves spreads, while in spring, the double-flowered cherry blossoms bloom in all their glory.
This shrine, known for its power to ward off misfortune, has an interesting anecdote. It is said that by passing through the scattered love stones during a visit, one's wish for a good encounter will come true. Why not take on the challenge?
