Kitakyushu City is home to a magnificent totem pole, gifted from the city of Tacoma, Washington, USA. This pole, known as the 'Eagle Chief Pole', was presented to Kitakyushu in 1989 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Kitakyushu Port.
Totem poles are traditional wooden carvings of Native American art, depicting animals and other figures that symbolize the history and beliefs of clans and tribes. The Eagle Chief Pole features carvings of animals such as eagles, bears, and foxes, exuding a unique charm.
Standing at a height of approximately 14 meters, this pole stands proudly in the entrance hall of the 8th floor of the Kitakyushu International Conference Hall. Its overwhelming presence and exquisite carvings captivate visitors.
The Eagle Chief Pole is also a symbol of the sister city exchange between Kitakyushu City and Tacoma. The two cities established a sister city partnership in 1959 and have deepened exchanges in various fields. This pole is cherished as a symbol of this friendly relationship.
The artistic charm and the bond between the two cities embodied in the Eagle Chief Pole. When visiting Kitakyushu, be sure to feel its power up close.
