Tourist attraction • Higashiomi, Himeshima, Higashikunisaki District, Oita 872-1501, Japan
The Asagimadara Autumn Resting Place, located in the Higashiumi area of Himeshima Village, Higashiusuki District, Oita Prefecture, lives up to its name by attracting numerous Asagimadara butterflies in the autumn. These butterflies, traveling from Hokkaido to Okinawa across the Pacific Ocean, take a temporary rest here. The large group of over 100 butterflies dancing among the grass and trees creates a dream-like scene.
The greatest charm of this place is the opportunity for close encounters with butterflies. The Asagimadara butterflies, accustomed to humans, are not afraid of human closeness and leisurely spread their wings or sip nectar from flowers. Quietly walking, you can feel the ecology of the butterflies. Some individuals have been marked, and some have even flown to Taiwan.
While strolling through the hilly area filled with leschenaultia flowers, make memories of encountering butterflies. May and October are the peak seasons, but depending on the timing, you might encounter the fluttering butterflies. Access is a bit difficult, but the smiles of the people drawn to this world indicate that it is worth a visit.
It is essential to be considerate of the butterflies. Making loud noises or rushing at the butterflies may cause them to flee. Approach quietly, spend leisurely time, and do not forget to appreciate and cherish the blessings of nature.
