Tourist attraction • Arimacho, Kita Ward, Kobe, Hyogo 651-1401, Japan
Located in the back of Arima Onsen, the source of soda hot springs stands. As you climb up the steep slope, a sparkling watercourse emerges from the ground, as if a volcano has come back to life. This is truly the heart of Arima, where you can experience the blessings of the earth created by the lava up close.
When poured from the tap, the soda water spreads a strong bitterness similar to sulfur when you take a sip. However, this taste tells the story of Arima's history. This soda water, which has been used for drinking since ancient times, was said to have been used as a substitute for cider by adding sugar.
This soda hot spring also serves as the raw material for Arima's specialty, 'soda crackers.' It is said that the soda is added to the crackers' dough and then fermented. The secret to their fluffy texture lies in this mysterious spring.
At times, when gazing at the bubbles of carbon dioxide rising from the ground, you may feel a mysterious sense of the earth's breath. This spring, which continues to gush unchanged, is also evidence of the culture that Arima has nurtured over the long years.
