Experience the Power of Nature - Intermittent Springs at Umi Jigoku

Impressive Natural Phenomenon

At Umi Jigoku hot spring in Beppu, you can witness the eruption of intermittent springs, experiencing the overwhelming power of nature. Approximately every 30 to 40 minutes, hot springs of about 100 degrees Celsius erupt vigorously to a height of 30 meters. This grand spectacle is likened to a 'waterspout' and has become the origin of its name.

The Pleasure of Timing the Wait

The eruption of the intermittent springs lasts for about 10 minutes, but the next eruption may take over 30 minutes. Therefore, the pleasure of timing the eruption is also one of the joys. The park has waiting areas and guidance facilities, allowing you to comfortably spend your waiting time.

Enjoy Local Delicacies at the Shops

At the Umi Jigoku hot spring shops, you can get delicious food from Oita. Especially recommended are fresh gelato and juice made from local fruits and milk. While waiting for the intermittent springs to erupt, why not savor the local flavors?

Gardens Surrounded by the Blessings of Nature

The grounds offer beautiful cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, and the graceful sight of butterflies flying. Take a leisurely stroll through the garden integrated with nature and be healed by the unique scenery of Beppu.

At Umi Jigoku, spectacular natural phenomena, local flavors, and seasonal landscapes await. When you visit Beppu, be sure to stop by.

It’s the geyser hot spring. I was lucky enough to visit during “showtime” (when the geyser is most active). And wow, the geyser really spits out a lot of hot pressured water! Unlike the other parks, this one doesn’t have a big hot spring. Only a small one surrounding the geyser. A commonly missed thing about the park is that there’s a garden path behind but most tourists would just gather around the geyser.

Note: There are certain times it erupts so take some time if you're not sure when. We were just lucky to get there on time but we were in a rush. Nice to look at for a while. Would recommend getting the ticket for all 7 hells as you would save money on it.

The Mog Champ sends his regards. Tatsumaki Jigoku is the second hells hot spring I visited right after Chinoike, since it's right next to each other! Easy access am I right? Nothing much here happens until the geyser goes off which is about every 10-15 mins if I recall correctly? So just need to wait patiently if you get here and nothing happens. Just sit around with the rest of the audience! It's not as impressive as I thought but it still felt pretty cool, not disappointing in any way. Thanks for the experience Tatsumaki Jigoku! Mogliest Regards, Your Mog Champ

It's OK, but it's not like Yellowstone in any way. The bus situation to get there and the waiting involved didn't contribute much. If you are doing the 7 hells, I would pass on these last two because they eat up a lot of time and are just ok. The main detractor is the long wait to get a bus down to the location and the the mass exit as soon as the geyser erupts...and the resulting 3 bus wait to get back to the start.

If you are lucky enough, you can see this spectacular phenomenon immediately, otherwise, 30-40 minutes interval of squirt of hot water while duration is around 6-10 minutes each performance. Seating with over 100 covers in front of the fountain like a outdoor grand theater.
