Jigen-ji Temple is the thirteenth temple of the Chichibu Thirty-four Kannon Pilgrimage. Stepping into the temple grounds, one is greeted by the contrast of the greenery and the red walls. Established in 1486, this is a venerable temple that has been rebuilt multiple times after suffering from fires. The present main hall was reconstructed in 1900, displaying an elegant and traditional architecture.
True to its name, Jigen-ji Temple, which means "gives eyes to the blind and protects the eyes of those who can see," is known as the "eye" temple that bestows various blessings related to the eyes. The tea made from the Megusuri tree and the "yakushi ame" candy are said to have preventive effects on eye diseases and have become popular souvenirs among visitors.
Every year on July 8th, the Yakushi Ame festival, a celebration of the Yakushi Nyorai, attracts over 20,000 visitors. This festival is one of the three major festivals in Chichibu and is a grand event where the temple grounds are filled with people praying for eye health, and where the preventive "eye tea" and "yakushi ame" are distributed.
By visiting Jigen-ji Temple, you can experience the blessing of the eyes in a space adorned with history and tradition. Receive a temple seal, pick up a souvenir, and spend a memorable day that will heal your body and soul.
