Kyoto is home to many parks adorned with history. Among them, Sengokuso Park in Ukyo-ku is an enchanting presence rooted in the local community. It has been loved by the local people as a place that conveys the story of the once-existing "Sengokuso boat."
In the past, there was a real Sengokuso boat on display in Kyoto City, called Choei Maru. This boat was a cargo ship that operated regular routes between Fukui Prefecture and Hokkaido during the Taisho era. The existence of this ship in inland Kyoto was filled with a mysterious charm.
With the changing times, the Sengokuso boat disappeared, but it continued to linger in the memories of the local people. Therefore, during the reorganization of the park, workshops were held, and the opinions of the residents were reflected. Efforts were made to convey history, such as the relocation of a monument related to the Sengokuso boat and the installation of explanatory boards.
The reorganized Sengokuso Park also functions as a playground for children. A safe sandbox is provided in the toddler area, which is separated from the open space. Unusual play equipment is also a charm for older children.
The park has suitable shaded areas, allowing for a comfortable time even on hot summer days. The bicycle parking area is also shaded, making it a base for cycling. In the vicinity, there are historical sites such as the Tenzuka Kofun and Kiyoyama Kofun, making it enjoyable as a walking course as well.
Sengokuso Park is a charming space where history, nature, and play merge. It conveys stories rooted in the community and nurtures children's smiles, making it a park that is unique to Kyoto.
