Place of worship • 31 Fukakusa Ōkamedani Gorōtachō, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-0852, Japan
Seiryo-in stands near the top of a mountain in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto. This temple is a hidden gem that condenses the weight of history and the beauty of nature in a tranquil setting, away from the hustle and bustle. Once you step into the temple grounds, you will be enveloped in a silence that makes you feel as if you were lost in another world, freeing you from everyday stress.
Seiryo-in is known as the temple associated with Lady Okame, a concubine of Tokugawa Ieyasu. During Ieyasu's stay in Fushimi, there was a hermitage on this site dedicated to the longevity Kannon, and it became a place where Lady Okame prayed for safe childbirth. As a result, Ieyasu had an Amida Nyorai statue made, which became the main object of worship at Seiryo-in.
The charm of Seiryo-in is not just its history. The temple grounds surrounded by flowers blooming in each season, fruit-bearing trees, and lush greenery provide a healing space for visitors. A deep breath while walking around will let you feel the power of nature.
During occasionally held special openings, visitors can appreciate valuable materials and treasures that are not usually visible. You might come across fascinating fragments of history related to the Tokugawa family, such as exhibits about Gorotamaru-sama, who was born to Lady Okame.
Seiryo-in is located along the road from Sumizome to Rokkakuji, diagonally opposite Fujishiro Elementary School. It may be a bit difficult to find as there is no temple gate, but that also adds to its hideaway charm. There is a parking lot along the main road, making it relatively easy to access by car.
Seiryo-in was a place where Tokugawa Ieyasu sought healing. Its silence and historical weight will also heal our modern hearts. Why not spend a moment away from the hustle and bustle, enveloped in history and nature? A special time just for you awaits at Seiryo-in.
