Sagano is one of the representative tourist spots in Kyoto, but amidst the popular attractions, there are still wonderful hidden places waiting to be discovered. This time, let us introduce you to one of those hidden gems in Kyoto, the "Yudofu Sagano's Stone Pagoda Group".
Yudofu Sagano is located about a 10-minute drive from Arashiyama in the northwest of Kyoto. Within this small settlement, there is a mysterious place where countless stone pagodas stand. Surrounded by verdant mountains, as soon as you step in, you will be embraced by a world of tranquility, as if time has come to a standstill.
These stone pagodas were erected one after another by the people who settled in this area during the Edo period for the sake of ancestral mourning. Over 400 years later, it has become one of the foremost places of mourning in Kyoto, with over 700 stone Buddhas gathered here.
You will feel the deep spirituality residing in each stone figure. From solemn expressions to gentle smiles, and at times, a touch of sorrow, it seems as if each soul is deeply engraved in the intricate details of the sculptures. The stone pagodas, naturally integrated over the long years, seem to reflect the human heart standing at the boundary between life and death.
When strolling around the stone pagoda group, you will find yourself involuntarily captivated by its presence. The luxurious experience of being able to appreciate them to your heart's content in a quiet environment is the charm unique to Sagano. It might also be nice to contemplate the finiteness of life and the eternal cycle of existence while facing the stone Buddhas.
Yudofu Sagano's Stone Pagoda Group is located about a 10-minute taxi ride from Randen Arashiyama Station. It is relatively convenient to access from Kyoto Station by city bus (Line 207), which takes about 40 minutes. The site has slopes and continues with stone-paved paths, so please come in comfortable shoes.
While Kyoto boasts renowned landmarks counted as World Heritage Sites, these peaceful places are also one of its attractions. Why not visit Yudofu Sagano's Stone Pagoda Group and ponder over the deep history and culture of Kyoto?
