The Ebata Tameike Seidi, located in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is a concrete gravity dam completed in 1930 during the early Showa period for irrigation purposes. Built with rough stone concrete and faced with granite, this dam represents the pinnacle of advanced technology at the time. In 2001, it was designated as the oldest concrete gravity dam for irrigation in Japan, becoming a registered tangible cultural property.
The purpose of constructing this dam was to provide stable irrigation water to the surrounding farmland. Even now, it continues to supply water from agricultural waterways to moisten the fields downstream. This place, which has supported people's livelihoods since ancient times, is imbued with the wisdom and sweat of our predecessors.
A small stream flows beneath the dam, creating a tranquil landscape. From the walking path, you can get an up-close view of the majestic dam, feeling the weight of time. However, the location can be difficult to discern at times, and dense vegetation may grow, so caution is advised when visiting.
The Ebata Tameike Seidi is a prime example of the harmony woven by human technology and nature. This place, which continues to fulfill its role while paying respect to the wisdom of our predecessors, is a valuable tourist spot where you can experience the history and tradition of Yamaguchi.
