It is said that Emperor Kammu, guided by Wake no Kiyomaro, visited this place and prayed for the peace of the capital by dressing the statue of the shogun in armor and burying it. After that, around the Kamakura period, it was designated as the tomb of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, and the name Shogunzuka became established. Its historical significance as the birthplace of Kyoto is immeasurable.
In the precincts, there is a Seiryuden built in 2014, which enshrines the national treasure of the Aofudo Myoo statue. Originally built in 1915 to commemorate the enthronement of Emperor Taisho, the building was once at risk of dismantling after the war. However, it was revived as a cultural heritage by the Rengein Monzeki and given new life in this place.
The path starting from the bell tower of Chion-in to Shogunzuka has the most charming atmosphere. There is also a way to visit by Keihan Bus, but walking on the quiet road surrounded by mountains offers a different glimpse of Kyoto.
