Museum • Shimomachi-211 Okoshi, Ichinomiya, Aichi 494-0006, Japan
Nestled in the quiet streets of Ichinomiya, the Ichinomiya Onishi Historical Folk Museum Annex (Former Hayashi Family Residence) stands as a nationally registered tangible cultural property that served as a secondary inn from the Edo period to the Taisho era. It truly embodies the bygone atmosphere, making it an exceptional hidden gem.
The Former Hayashi Family Residence consists of the main building dating back to 1913 (Taisho 2) and the extension of the rear parlor in 1926 (Showa 1). The stately presence of the main building, coupled with the meticulous craftsmanship of the rear parlor, exudes an unparalleled elegance. The well-maintained weeping cherry trees and moss garden in the inner courtyard offer a delightful spectacle throughout the changing seasons.
The Former Hayashi Family Residence holds a historical legacy from the Edo period to the Meiji Restoration, with the Hayashi family serving as the secondary innkeepers in the shukubamachi (post stations) and managing the ferry service across the Kiso River. Although it collapsed during the 1891 Nobi Earthquake, it has been reconstructed to its present form. This valuable facility allows visitors to contemplate the historical ambiance and recall the vestiges of the former shukuba town.
Entry to the museum is free, and visitors appreciate the detailed explanations provided by the staff. The tea service (300 yen) with a view of the garden is also popular, offering a relaxed moment of respite. We invite you to immerse yourself in a leisurely mood and contemplate the history and culture. Why not take a moment out of your sightseeing itinerary to experience the colorful tapestry of the extraordinary? Ichinomiya's hidden retreat beckons you to a classical world.
