In Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture, known for the Shikoku Pilgrimage, lies the hidden gem of a temple called Manganji, closely associated with Kobo Daishi. The temple grounds, adorned with historical romance, are enveloped in a serene atmosphere that soothes the soul.
Manganji is situated in a sacred place said to have been chosen by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) for his ascetic training. Initially, it was a renowned temple complex, but it fell into decline amidst the turbulent times. However, the publication of the "Shikoku Henreidoh Shinan" during the Edo period led to its revival. Throughout the temple grounds, there are spots that exude the weight of history, such as the stone stupa, and the famous double persimmon tree admired by Sen no Rikyu.
As you walk along the approach, you are gently welcomed by the shade of a Ginkgo tree that is said to be over 500 years old. Further inside, a calm pond extends, with the vermilion-lacquered main hall reflected on its surface, creating a fantastical scene as if time has stopped. If you stop by the small shrines along the approach, you will truly experience a moment of pure tranquility.
Manganji Temple has continued to provide deep solace to travelers who stop by during their pilgrimage. When visiting the Shikoku Pilgrimage, why not take the time to visit this sacred land? The tranquil space nurtured by history is sure to refresh both mind and body.
