Historical landmark • Japan, 〒639-1042 Nara, Yamatokoriyama, Koizumichō, 字大塚
Koizumi Otsuka Kofun is a small hill located in Koizumi town. This 4th-century keyhole-shaped tomb is one of the many historical sites that remain in the region of Nara. Although the front portion has been lost, the rear portion still retains its original form.
This tomb used to have both a front and rear portion, but due to surrounding development, the front portion has been lost. However, from the remaining rear portion, we can still glimpse its original construction. Its striking presence captures the essence of the time when the Yamato court flourished.
“There is something to be found when digging, that is Nara,” says the local people. In the past, there were no fences around the tomb, and it was common to see children with shovels searching for pottery fragments. This overlooked anecdote illustrates the deep attachment that the people of Nara have for the tomb.
While it once appeared unsightly due to surrounding development, the tomb is now embraced by nature, with trees flourishing around it. Enveloped in greenery, its appearance holds a different charm from its former grandeur. Take a leisurely stroll through the history of Nara and savor the beauty of the tomb.
