In the quiet countryside of Mitsushima, Yamamoto District, Akita Prefecture, stands Matsuanji, an ancient Soto sect temple. It is said to have been built during the Tenbun era (1532-1554), with a history that spans over 400 years. Stepping onto the grounds, one is enveloped in a tranquil world surrounded by lush pine forests, seemingly frozen in time.
The main hall enshrines a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. The wooden structure exudes the ambiance of the Edo period and continues to host zazen meditation and traditional Buddhist events. The adjacent study, with sunlight filtering through its lattice doors, creates a gentle and serene atmosphere.
The large pine forest flanking the approach leads visitors to a transcendent state. With each step, one can feel the cooling air of the deepening trees, bringing a sense of refreshing clarity.
