Tourist attraction • 625 Kannawa, Beppu, Oita 874-0041, Japan
Beppu City is a well-known hot spring area, and among them, Oniyama Jigoku is a special presence. Here, about 80 crocodiles inhabit, creating a strange spectacle befitting of the name "Jigoku" (hell).
In the Taisho era, Oniyama Jigoku became the first place in Japan to utilize the heat of hot springs for crocodile breeding. Various types of crocodiles, such as crocodiles and alligators, live while being protected by Beppu's warm geothermal heat.
An unmissable major event is held on weekends. It is the time for feeding the crocodiles. The sight of crocodiles receiving food from the keepers is impressive. You will be able to catch a glimpse of the wild instincts brimming with vitality.
At Oniyama Jigoku, you can enjoy not only the crocodiles but also the natural landscape. The scenery that colors Beppu's four seasons with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves is spread out. The sight of the beautiful butterfly called Asagimadara dancing is also a must-see. A traditional event called "Kamado Kagura" is also held on April 15th.
Oniyama Jigoku is a charming tourist spot unique to Beppu, where hot springs, crocodiles, and nature are wonderfully integrated. Please come and experience this mysterious world.
