This is the best guest house I've been too...the dorm area is completely new, while the common area/owner house is a 100 year old traditional house that's been renovated with a lot of antique stuff inside. Sitting inside of it and looking out at the garden really gives you the feeling of the old Japan and how they lived. Hikone is a lot quieter than Kyoto, but has the same traditional charm without the over the top touristy stuff. For those who prefer the less crowded areas, this is it!

Friendly guesthouse and helpful owners. The old 100 year old house is for the common area and the dorm is brand new. I had a lot of privacy because no guests were there that night, might be a bit different when it's full house. Located near a beautiful canal, quiet neighborhood but not far from the castle.

New , clean lodging garden view from dorms. Old traditional house partially refurbished. Young couple ( Hajime and Noriko) make it feel comfortable and homelike. Suited to backpackers , cyclists and motorbike travellers. All are welcome , supermarket nearby.

I'm used to staying in cheap hotels, but this was the one where I was treated the worst in the past. It was also disappointing that the dormitory structure was very simple and there was not much private area.
If you search on airbnb, you will find Kishida House in Nagahama and Ken house in Takatsuki. Both are cheap and you can secure a private area, so this one is recommended for those who prefer biwaichi. The owners of both inns are so friendly that you will want to stay for a long time.

About 15 minutes walk from Hikone Castle. Quietly located between the Showa-style downtown area and the modern, chic downtown area. When I called from Heiwado, a nearby supermarket, they came to pick me up and showed me the way to the hotel. The accommodation is in the main building of an old folk house, a new wing for guests to stay in, and a dormitory with bunk beds. There was a washlet in the main house.
