Place of worship • Iwato, Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki 882-1621, Japan
Located in Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture, Amano Iwato is known as a crucial stage in Japanese mythology and is considered a sacred place. It is said that when Amaterasu Omikami hid in Amano Iwato, the eight million gods gathered on this riverbank to hold a meeting. This place, which has transcended time immemorial, is still imbued with a mystical atmosphere.
A 15-minute walk from Amano Iwato Shrine along the Iwatogawa path leads to Amano Iwato. Along the way, you can enjoy the majestic nature while listening to the murmur of the river and the rustle of trees. Inside the cave stands a torii, and the sight of numerous stacked stones is breathtaking.
This place, known as a powerful power spot, attracts many worshippers. The act of stacking stones within the cave is widely practiced as a custom for making wishes. However, some areas have uneven ground, so please pay attention to safety.
Note that the cave is relatively dark, requiring ingenuity in photography. Although cool even in summer, because walking a certain distance is required, those without confidence in their stamina are recommended to rest as needed while proceeding.
When visiting Amano Iwato, it is recommended to also visit the nearby Nishimoto Shrine of Amano Iwato Shrine. Tours explaining the legend of Amano Iwato are held every 30 minutes for free, and you can see sacred objects in areas usually not accessible.
Amano Iwato is worth visiting both as a stage of Japanese mythology and as a place to enjoy natural beauty. Visiting in conjunction with Takachiho Gorge will allow you to fully experience the mystical charm of Miyazaki. Be sure to witness the unique atmosphere woven by myth and nature with your own eyes.
