Standing on the mountain overlooking the city of Hida Takayama is the Takayama Castle Ruins. It flourished as the center of Takayama Domain, which ruled Hida from the Toyotomi period to the mid-Edo period. This flat mountain castle built by Nagachika Kanamori is an important relic that laid the foundation for today's prosperity in Takayama.
The path to the castle ruins starts as a gentle slope like a promenade but changes to a full-fledged mountain trail halfway. It takes about an hour to a round trip at a leisurely pace, during which you can see traces of old stone walls and moats. Although there is no main keep, you can fully enjoy the atmosphere unique to Hida's mountain castles.
Upon reaching the Honmaru ruins, a magnificent view overlooking Takayama spreads out. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Northern Alps, making it a truly scenic spot. Due to the rich natural environment, there are bear bells installed, giving a sense of adventure.
Part of the castle ruins has been developed into a park, becoming a place of relaxation for locals. Contrary to the bustling area around Takayama Jinya, time flows leisurely here. It is also popular as a jogging course in the morning.
Although slightly away from the main tourist areas of Takayama, it is an unmissable spot for history lovers and castle enthusiasts. However, note that some parts, such as stone walls built in 1969, are later additions.
The Takayama Castle Ruins are located away from the hustle and bustle of tourist destinations, making it a precious spot where you can quietly feel the history and nature of Hida. When visiting Takayama, it is worth extending your walk to explore this hidden historical treasure.
