Nishikō-ji Temple: A Healing Maple Destination

A Hidden Temple Surrounded by Nature

Nishikō-ji Temple quietly stands in Nantan City, about an hour's drive from the hustle and bustle of Kyoto. It is a highly recommended quiet maple spot, like a hidden place, for those who want to avoid crowds. The view of vibrant maple leaves spread out on the stone pathway leading to the main hall is truly breathtaking. Surrounded by green mountains, it feels like a soothing space embraced by nature.

The Awe-Inspiring Red Leaves and Water Play

On the right side of the main hall, there is a large maple tree. The colorful leaves are sure to captivate anyone. Furthermore, when someone approaches, it triggers a water play with a murmuring stream. The sudden sound of water in the quiet temple creates an extraordinary charm.

Enchanted by the Beauty of Yellow Leaves

Although famous for its red leaves, Nishikō-ji Temple also stands out for the beauty of its yellow leaves. The dancing yellow leaves in the wind create a serene and fluttering yellow carpet. We recommend you take a leisurely stroll while admiring the changing scenery of the yellow leaves.

The Best Time to Visit Slightly Later

While there is information that the best time to visit is around mid-November, the slightly later period in late November is the best season. During this time, you can not only appreciate the turning red and yellow leaves, but also visit quietly with fewer people. It is definitely a recommended time for those who want to feel the passage of time slowly.

A hidden spot for viewing autumn leaves, the approach to the Sanmon gate is a tunnel of cherry blossoms. It is said to have been built in the Nara period (8th year of the Tenpyo Shoho era) and was once a subsidiary temple of Takao's Jingoji Temple. As it is not a tourist temple, there is no admission fee. The chief priest is also a very kind person. Speaking of the transom on the gable, the main hall has a 6m long Ssangyong transom by the famous carver Gonji Nakai, which can only be seen three times a year. Month 15th, August 18th, December 31st I definitely want to go see it next time.

I visited on November 28, 2013 to see the autumn leaves. I went there after a friend told me that it was a hidden spot for autumn leaves. I didn't meet a single person during my visit. I was surprised to see that when a person approached, the sensor detected it and the water flowed like a waterfall. The stone steps up to the main hall and the autumn leaves around the main hall were so beautiful❗❗

There were a lot of maple leaves, so I think we'll soon be able to see the beautiful scenery turning red. ? November 3rd was still early. It is said that it prospered as a branch temple of Jingoji, and you can see a statue of Kobo Daishi. Water flows next to the Kobo Daishi statue using a sensor. I definitely want to go see the red carpet of autumn leaves.
