A tomb stands on the grounds of Nara University of Education in Takahata-cho. That is Kibitsuzuka Kofun. The tomb with a diameter of about 25 meters was once believed to be the tomb of Kibitsuhiko. However, excavation surveys in 2002 revealed that this tomb dates back to the late Kofun period of the 6th century. Items unearthed include a three-lug sword from the latter half of the 5th century, embodying the ancient breath.
Kibitsuhiko was said to have been a hero who protected this land. Memorial monuments are erected around the overgrown tomb, exuding a quiet reverence. In the serene atmosphere, you can ponder about the great people of ancient times.
Located within the university grounds, prior application is required for visiting. However, once permission is granted, you can face history to your heart's content in this precious place filled with calm air. The trees also have a tradition of curses and are full of mysterious charm.
Kibitsuzuka Kofun is an island full of ancient charm. Standing there, you can forget the passage of time and feel the footsteps of the heroes. The gateway to the ancient is still quietly open.
