The Village of Onta Pottery lies nestled in the mountains of Hita City, Oita Prefecture. It offers landscapes that seem to take you back to the Showa era, and it is the very archetype of Japan's original scenery. In this tranquil environment surrounded by lush nature, the tradition of Onta pottery with over 400 years of history continues to thrive today.
Onta pottery is characterized by its simple and soft texture. Its unique patterns and color schemes captivate viewers. Not only does it complement Japanese cuisine, but it also harmonizes beautifully with Western dishes, showcasing its versatile charm.
As you walk through the village, the distinctive “Gi—gotton” sound catches your ears. This is the sound of the “Kara-Uchi,” indispensable for the soil preparation of Onta pottery. This traditional method, which uses the river's hydropower to finely crush the soil, can be described as the symbol of the Village of Onta Pottery.
The village is dotted with about 10 kilns. Visiting each kiln to observe the masterpieces created through the skill and dedication of artisans is a unique delight of this village. The warm hospitality of the kiln staff also warms the hearts of visitors.
For pottery and ceramics enthusiasts, the Village of Onta Pottery is heaven. However, more than that, it is a precious spot where you can feel the harmony of Japanese tradition and nature, continuing to attract many people. We cannot help but hope that the charming and beautiful atmosphere of this “place” will be passed down for a long time to come.
