Nestled in the mountains of Kawanehon Town, Chimanji Temple boasts a history of over a thousand years as a Soto Zen temple since the Heian period. Once a Tendai sect temple, it converted to Soto Zen in the late 15th century and has quietly endured ever since. The vast grounds, spanning 5000 tsubo (approximately 16,500 square meters), are impressive with its neatly arranged temple buildings.
The highlight of Chimanji Temple is undoubtedly the Kawane Great Buddha. As you ascend the path leading from the main hall to the right, the dignified figure of the Buddha appears, surrounded by 33 Kannon statues, creating a solemn atmosphere. The gentle expression of the Buddha will calm the hearts of those who gaze upon it.
The temple's architecture is also not to be missed. The temple gate, designated as a tangible cultural property of the town, and the unusually large bell tower attract attention. In front of the main hall, you'll find heart-shaped paving stones, adding a touch of romance to this temple full of surprises.
The allure of Chimanji Temple is its ability to be enjoyed throughout the seasons. In spring, the temple grounds are adorned with the yellow flowers of the Ippe trees, and in autumn, the foliage turns the grounds red. It's a place aptly referred to as a
