Escape the hustle and bustle of Toranomon, Tokyo, and step into a serene hilltop; here unfolds a tranquil space unimaginable in the city. Surrounded by tiled roofed walls and adjacent to a registered tangible cultural property, the Western-style mansion, this unique combination is the first impression of Kikuchi Kanji Memorial Tomo Art Museum.
Opened in 2003, this museum was established based on the collection of contemporary ceramic collector Mr. Tomo Kikuchi. Its name is derived from Mr. Tomo’s father, businessman Kanji Kikuchi.
The first thing that catches your eye upon entering the museum is the beautiful spiral staircase. The space created by glass railings and Japanese paintings on the walls is truly unique. The artistic experience that begins here hints at a special escape from the mundane.
The exhibits at Tomo Art Museum widely break the conventional image of ceramics. From practical tableware to large sculptures, their surprising diversity stands out. Especially noteworthy are the avant-garde pieces that not only showcase beauty but also spark the imagination with questions like 'What is this?'
The exhibition methods are also thoughtfully designed, allowing many works to be observed up close and from all angles, not just through glass. This enables a thorough appreciation of every detail of the artworks.
After art appreciation, the attached cafe 'Chafuu' is highly recommended. Here, you can immerse yourself in the afterglow of the artworks you've just seen while gazing at the Japanese garden. Moments spent here will make you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.
The Kikuchi Kanji Memorial Tomo Art Museum is an ideal destination for those who want to discover new charms of contemporary ceramics or immerse themselves in art without the city noise. Enjoy an extraordinary artistic experience in this museum, nestled among skyscrapers.
