Ohara Raigoin Temple, located about 5 minutes further up from the popular tourist spot Sanzen-in Temple in Kyoto, is a hidden gem. This place, relatively less crowded, allows you to leisurely appreciate the historical Buddha statues and beautiful gardens in a quiet environment.
The main hall of Raigoin enshrines three figures of Buddha from the Fujiwara era. The statues of the Medicine Buddha, Amida Buddha, and Shakyamuni Buddha, with their gentle expressions and historical value, captivate visitors. The Medicine Buddha, in particular, is known as the “Ear Medicine Buddha” for its efficacy in curing ear ailments.
Within the temple grounds extend beautifully maintained gardens. The space surrounded by vibrant green moss and trees offers a deep sense of tranquility to visitors. The garden in front of the main hall is especially magnificent, showcasing different appearances with each season.
The “Shishi Tobi-ishi” (Leapfrog Stone) located up the stone steps from the main hall tells an intriguing legend of the temple. This stone is said to have turned into a rock after a lion heard the Buddhist music (shōmyō) of Ryonin Shonin, symbolizing the deep connection between Raigoin and music.
Raigoin holds special exhibitions of valuable paintings from the Nyorai Storehouse during the spring (May) and autumn (November). Visiting during these times allows you to experience cultural heritage that are not normally accessible.
Reaching Raigoin requires ascending further from Sanzen-in, with a gentle slope along the way. For those not confident in their physical stamina, it is recommended to take your time. Additionally, since there are fewer visitors, it is important to maintain quietness during your visit to preserve the tranquility.
Ohara Raigoin is an ideal place for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle and immerse in Japan's traditional culture and history. As a hidden gem of Kyoto sightseeing, it is certainly worth a visit.
