Torikozan is a small and gentle mountain located in the eastern part of Mine City. It is marked as "Goshiyama" or "Amakoyama" on maps and signposts, but it is affectionately called "Torikozan" by the locals. The school song of the nearby Jōhara Elementary School still contains the lyrics "Torikozan", and it has been a popular destination for field trips.
The top of Torikozan is reached by a gentle hiking trail, taking about 2 hours round trip. As you proceed along the trail, the surrounding scenery gradually opens up, finally revealing a 360-degree panoramic view. From here, you can overlook Mine City, Suo-nada, and even distant Mount Unzen in Kyushu, making it an amazing viewpoint.
The nearest access point to Torikozan is about 15 minutes by car from Miho IC. It is a short 5-minute walk from the parking lot to the trailhead. Although the trail is well-maintained, it's reassuring to have equipment such as rubber boots and beverages. Detailed information is also available on the Mine City Tourist Association's website, so it's recommended to check in advance.
The view from Torikozan presents a different face in each season. The fresh greenery of May and the autumn leaves of October are particularly popular times. Take a break at the mountaintop and immerse yourself in the panoramic view of this hidden gem. It will be an opportunity to encounter the hidden scenic beauty of Yamaguchi at the beloved "Torikozan" by the locals.
