Place of worship • Nishihama-1615 Nakakomatsu, Inawashiro, Yama District, Fukushima 969-2271, Japan
Quietly standing by the shores of Lake Inawashiro in Fukushima Prefecture, Kofunato Tenmangu Shrine is one of Japan's three major Tenmangu shrines. It holds an important place alongside Dazaifu Tenmangu and Kitano Tenmangu, but its charm is still unknown to many.
In the year Tenryaku 2 (948), a priest from Omi Province traveled with a statue of Sugawara no Michizane and arrived at this place. According to legend, the statue suddenly became heavy and immovable, leading to the establishment of this site as its permanent seat. The shrine was born inspired by a landscape similar to Suma’s.
Kofunato Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, is renowned as a deity of learning. Many students visit yearly to pray for success in exams. Notably, there is a “calculation tablet” dedicated by a Japanese mathematics expert in the early Meiji period. This offering, inscribed with math problems and solutions, is a precious cultural heritage befitting the deity of learning.
A sign labeled “Power Spot” at the entrance draws attention as a place to feel mystical energies. The serene environment provides a special space to refresh both body and soul.
Located on the north shore of Lake Inawashiro among the pine forest of Tenjin Beach, Kofunato Tenmangu Shrine offers beautiful landscapes in harmony with nature. The scenery of the lake changes with the seasons and heals the hearts of its visitors.
Although access is somewhat inconvenient, about a 38-minute walk (approx. 3.1 km) from Sekito Station on the JR Ban'etsu West Line, the peaceful visiting environment is preserved. You can receive a goshuin, a red seal stamp, at the nearby Kikuya Store for a fee of 300 yen, and it’s written on a separate piece of paper.
Kofunato Tenmangu Shrine is a special place away from the noise, where you can feel history, nature, and mystical powers. It is a hidden gem not only for those wishing for academic success but also for those seeking mental tranquility.
