Fukuchiin, a place where you can be healed by the compassionate figure of Jizo Bodhisattva

Fukuchiin is a temple quietly standing in the corner of Nara City. However, it contains a colossal Jizo Bodhisattva statue that is 2.5 meters tall, warmly welcoming visitors.

The charm of the ancient Jizo Bodhisattva statue

This Jizo Bodhisattva statue was originally located in another temple on Mount Kasagi, but later was moved to Fukuchiin. The exquisite craftsmanship, with attention to detail, is a masterpiece like a national treasure, and its compassionate gaze full of presence penetrates the heart.

Time for meditation bathed in light

During the visit, you can receive a leisurely explanation from the temple staff. When the sunlight outside shines into the inner sanctuary, rainbow-colored light leaks from the halo of the Jizo Bodhisattva, as if it is receiving protection. You will spend a memorable time of meditation gazing at the figure of Jizo Bodhisattva in silence.

Touching the hospitality

After the visit, you can receive hospitality with tea and candy. The ascetic monks will kindly and carefully explain the benefits of Jizo Bodhisattva and the history of Fukuchiin. You can also bring a stamp book and receive a commemorative stamp from Fukuchiin.

When you feel a little tired from sightseeing in Nara, why not visit Fukuchiin? You will encounter a compassionate figure of Jizo Bodhisattva and surely be able to refresh both mentally and physically.

Jizo Buddha is worth visiting even though it is located in Nara, which is full of national treasures. Parking lots 3 and 5 are available in front of the front gate.

The garden was not that unusual, and I was fascinated by the double roof and entered the temple grounds. According to the receptionist's explanation, a Buddha statue originally from a temple in Kasagi was brought there, and the temple had a single roof to match the Buddha, with the lower roof being an afterthought for the visitors. that's right. There is a fee to enter the temple, but we were able to see the 2.5 meter tall seated statue of a benevolent Buddha. It was a temple where I had a great time and received detailed answers to my questions about the Buddha and folding screens.

Unfortunately, you can't take pictures, but you can get a close-up look at the Jizo Bodhisattva seated statue, which is said to only be visible locally due to its size (you can even see the traces of the painting up close).

It was a very nice Jizo Bodhisattva. The explanation from the temple staff was very thorough. If the weather is good and you are lucky, you can see a rainbow-colored light behind the halo. Goshuin (300 yen) is included with viewing (500 yen). There are also goshuin stamps of Jizo statues, chief priests, and handrails.

The principal image of Fukuchi-in is a seated statue of Jizo Bodhisattva called Jizo Daibutsu. October 2016 was my third visit, and my first time receiving a stamp. I was the only visitor at the time, so I received an offering of sweets and tea from the temple staff, and while I thought it was rude, I ate them in front of the Gohonzon. The main hall and Gohonzon are important cultural properties.
