Train station • 2 Chome-32 Nanaehama, Hokuto, Hokkaido 049-0111, Japan
Nanaehama Station is a station of the Dounan Isaribi Railway located in Kitahiroshima City, Hokkaido. It has a long history, standing in the gentle Satoyama area with detached houses. Nanaehama Station was born as a station of the Jōsō Line of the national railway in the Taisho era and was later renamed the Esashi Line. In 2016, the line was abolished and it has been succeeded by the Dounan Isaribi Railway, which separated from JR Hokkaido.
Heading towards the coastline from the station, there is a memorial monument at the site of the Tokachi Maru maritime accident. This major accident led to the construction of the Seikan Tunnel. Nanaehama Station is the nearest station to the Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry terminal, which connects Aomori and Hakodate, and you can see travelers arriving early in the morning from the ferry.
The remnants of the past when the station was bustling with many passengers are gone, but the waiting room is well-maintained, and the townscape viewed from the platform spreads out in a circular shape like a fisheye lens. The landscape of the straight railway tracks gives a sense of the vastness unique to Hokkaido. There is a hint of loneliness, but at the same time, the nostalgic atmosphere of the countryside is deeply preserved, making it a calming station.
