The charm of Itoi Shrine in the hidden village of Nara, Yuitsuki

A historic shrine with striking red torii gates

Itoi Shrine is a historic shrine listed in the Engishiki Jinmyōchō (a list of shrines and deities compiled in 927). Upon entering the shrine grounds, the first thing that catches the eye is the beautifully red-painted torii gate. This rare sight of a red torii gate in Nara prefecture invites visitors into a sacred space.

Enshrining Toyokumono Iratsume-no-Mikoto, with beautiful paintings

The main hall was relocated from Kasuga Grand Shrine during the Edo period, enshrining Toyokumono Iratsume-no-Mikoto. Inside the worship hall, numerous beautiful paintings are displayed, surely captivating the beholders with their beauty. The shrine grounds also house four other shrines including Kasuga Shrine.

Traditional Nara atmosphere in the festival

In the 4th weekend of October each year, the autumn festival is held by the five neighborhood associations of Yuitsuki on a rotational basis. The festival preserves the traditional atmosphere of Nara, attracting attention as a highlight of the Yamato festivals. The forest on the shrine grounds is home to a large flock of white herons, enhancing the sacred atmosphere.

Access Information

Access to Itoi Shrine is convenient by car. There are about three parking spaces to the right just after passing through the torii gate. Please take your time to visit this shrine full of historical romance.
